Nah, I think that the whispers are the disembodied consciousness of the people that died on the island.
The smoke monster is just too... to mechanical (the noises that it makes, the "scanning" of peoples memories and it's way of operating) to be a bunch of souls. And the show has firmly entered the parapsychology road in the latest episode by introducing the concept of a personal, non-physical consciousness( in other words SOULS).
BTW, anyone knows if spending your whole day in a communication room of a rescue ship counts as being exposed to radiation?

but despite of the mechanical sound, there is no physical mechanism within the smoke, we see this very clearly when the smoke gets smashed into the energy barrier in the 3rd season, and btw, have you noticed that the whispers only appear when the smoke monster or walt is around?

Not true, there have been several instances when people heard those whispers, and there was no smoke mechanism. Besides, didn't the producers said we have seen only few percent of the smoke monster?

Spoiler: | The time shift might at least explain why it is impossible to find the island.
If the island is 30 minutes to 12 hours off from "normal" time, you would always miss it when you try to reach it by boat or similar.
You would probably need a device that shows you the way, i.e. the Looking Glass Station for the submarine, or the Satellite Mobile with GPS for the helicopter.
Special events like the electromagnet drawing down the airplane would work as well obviously. |

I always thought that was explained in the season finale of Season 2. When Desmond turned the switch it sent out that pulse which revealed the island for a second and those people let Penny know that they found it.

Yes, but why was she looking for it? She obviously had those Spanish dudes (or whatever) looking for the island, so she knew of it before it showed up.

Her father is obviously on of, if not the most involved people in the whole island scenario and in this episode we've seen how he found it - the auction he was in when Desmond found him was for Black Rock's journal (black rock is the slave trading ship where Jack and Daniel found the dynamite) so if the ship is on the island it's pretty logical to assume that it's journal contains hints on how to get to it.

Spoiler: | Penelopes Father and Sun Father and some other guys too are members of Dharma and they have got this Island, which is hidden inside those anomaly. The crash of 815 was intenionally. I think they have seen the future and know, that theres happening something big(like a war) and inside those Island they are able to survive. I think that Ben is fighting against Dharma and Said is killing all those people who will be responsible for the, lets say, nuclear holocaust. But thats just some theories |

crappy episode this week, but I hear the next one will be a bomb, guess Michael will return next week, it's still unknown if he is on the freighter or if he will appear on the island or in a flashback.
either way next week we will find who the 2 final oceanic 6 are, guess one of them is Sun, the other can probably be Michael or Jin

How the fuck can the people on the freighter know everybody from Oceanic Flight 815 and immediately recognize them on the island, but not Michael when he is with them on the same boat???
