HomeLAN - Finally, we have to ask; how is Half-Life 2 coming along?

Gabe Newell - Good. It's in great shape. We anticipate delivering it to Vivendi in August.

He Gabe Newell is alway kinda irritated when people ask that question and often refuses to answer. Cool that he answered now. To me this is bad because I expected it in July. I'm really getting sick of this.

it will be revolutionary. it'll put microsoft to shame thats for sure.

fat boy: Originally we were going to release it on April 1st. I even wrote a fake press release that went something like, "Due to tremendous pressure from the gaming community to ship Half-Life 2, we looked long and hard at the game to see if there was anything we could cut that would let us ship sooner. It looked like if we cut the third dimension, we'd be all set, so after five years in development, Valve and Nuclearvision proudly present Half-Life 2D." Fortunately saner minds prevailed.

could august be a fake press release? i really doubt august. september or even october is more likely. this game better be perfect! no bugs at all, at least no reoccuring bugs such as shitty wall textures so u get stuck.

The first wasn't revolutionary. It was a good story. When will people understand that? It was a fantastic game, Valve has some good story writers. I will never argue that, definately top 10 greatest games of all time, but to call a game that had a ripped off engine and lower poly models than it could have revolutionary is defecating on such greats like Doom and Warcraft. Just because a game is old and fantastic doesnt make it revolutionary, it didnt bring about a revolt in the gaming industry, it didn't raise standards for story telling, which could have been its only case of getting into said group, because still today many games have shitty basic rehashed stories.

Oh, and Mutantius, your quote should read

I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

Well i think that there happened a very important thing in the game industry when HL came in 1998..
And i will change my little quote from Johnny cash's When the Man comes around ( Thx for noticing that) Razz

lol.

Everything is an upgrade from something else. What's wrong with an updated HL1 engine? It's updated, just like every other thing on the planet.

Upgrade = good.

It will be an evolution, not a revolution. The next step in FPS. Revolutions are going to become extremely rare (hell, they already are now). In fact, I don't remember a single revolutionary title since GTA3.

it's extremely buggy... + it'll be easy to port your current hacks to HL2 when it comes out, it contains the same client funcs as HL1, it's only of the only games i know you can achieve god mode online... (well part from Rvs)... and no, i'm not talking about adminmod or any of those plugins...

I dont see S.T.A.L.K.E.R. being upgraded from anything else...

Maybe not directly, but they didn't pop out of a cave either, they have taken code examples and ideas from others over time and built upon them.

Sure they might have "started from scratch" with the code but their ideas are nothing too new, they just looked around and built upon previous ideas.

it's not the HL1 engine updated.... HL1 engine was made on the Q2 engine... but HL2 have his own started from nothing source engine

as for the physic... yeah the same library (havok) got used in previous game but was never that good implemented... just look at the difference of physic between let's say... thief3 and painkiller and far cry.. not the same thign but same system (I think thief3 use havok anyway)

Whats wrong with using a prebuilt physics engine, it just saves time and reduces the possible bugs.

Raz0r, you're just making way too many assumptions, wait until you play it before making bullshit comments.

ehmm dude first of all Half Life was build from Quake 1 stage not the Quake 2 stage of the quake engine.. And Far Cry have the Crytek engine, taht both have the GFX and the Physics..

A Link about the original HL Features: http://www.planethalflife.com/half-life/guide/overview.shtm

Take a look in HL SDK and then look in the leaked HL2 src... Also, they probably choose the update the engine because of the many mods there is for HL1... so it wouldnt be that big of a hazzle to update it.... The released ported mods fx. Rolling Eyes

Behave... and watch your language little one Very Happy

*edit* perhaps buggy was the wrong term to use, "shitty" is more like it imo, and this is just my opinion on the HL engine...

I will admit I havn't explored the SDK yet but the leaked build didn't really show anything of the final games quality. Neutral

That's because it was just that, a leak, which was NOT meant to be fun nor playable. That's why some of us prefer actually giving the developer the benefit of the doubt and not downloading it.

Thats what i was saying, because thats the only thing Raz0r could be judging the game on and it doesn't indicate anything of what the final quality will be like.
