I guess some people are incapable of understanding the difference between the two.

So what exactly is being taken from the game developer? It can't be the game, because the developer still has it. And it can't be money, because the developer didn't have that to begin with.

Not really. If you look at the people who download games and say they buy them, they say if they're a great game they buy.
So basically, if it's a great game it sells but in reduced numbers.
If it's a mediocre -> good game it sells sweet FA. People play but don't pay. Where as without piracy it would sell.
If it's a crap game the above kind of applies but hard to feel sorry for them when it shouldn't sell.
But any of them piracy does affect sales. Just the lesser the game the more it is affected.
So just a less honest pussy assed way of saying "Stop protection, it's threatening my free gaming!"

If there's a dedicated chip doing the job of SF or SR or whatever protection the particluar develop uses at the moment it will indeed affect performance - it will improve it.

stealing denies someone ownership of an item. if i steal a ferrari from a dealer, they are down 1 ferrari. if pirate or copy that ferrari, they still have theirs, but i'm driving an exact duplicate. the law hasn't really caught up, but that's why it's copyright infringement and not stealing.
and yeah this idea (TPM/Trusted computing) has been around for a while, there was a bit of talk when 'longhorn' was going to support it, not sure if it still does, but it probably does.
EDIT: D'oh!! only read first page.

Completely different thing. That was sold as an optionaly extra to improve performasnce. And it did in circumstances where it was utilised properly.
Hardly compares to a chip that would be enforced. Was just saying it's hardly going to make performance worse having the protection hardware instead of software.

Well that depends. Most copy protection software just runs checks when you start up a game, so where's the benefit really?

That's BS. Piracy is a problem but it's not the only/main reason why some games aren't selling well. As others have mentioned before me, the weak ports, the short game time, the dumbed down gameplay/stories, lack of optimization for the PC, few demos (and even most of those isn't really good) are the main reasons (I'm sure I've missed a few though).

If they sold games for a decent price then they would sell more. They're saying that piracy is driving these games companies to the wall. Yet look at the GTA series. Good games sell well, crap games go down the pan and rightly so. Look at who Japans richest man recently. Only the expresident of Nintendo.

Exactly. Great games do sell. But doesn't say much for the rest of the industry. Good games still deserve to sell.
And bad example there. He's made his money from consoles. Not PC gaming.
