Will Wright is the king of innovation honestly. Who has more original PC gaming ideas? All the way back to the first Sim games, and then reinventing them and then the sims...
Oh i know. However, what is worrisome to me is that i never got into the sims. I am just wondering if there is an actual fun "Game" here. But, whatever. It may very well keep me entertained regardless. Like I said, it's worth the money to find out.
What i am hoping is that they add some kind of expansion that turns the space part into a full fledged space trading/conquer game. Hehe that would be cool. being able to sell warez and trade with other planets and what not. maybe capture life forms on planets and sell them on others. Pretty endless ideas with this game I would imagine.
Wait what. Mr Sim himself is king of innovation all of a sudden? He's had 1 idea.
Games designed by Wright
* Raid on Bungeling Bay
* SimCity series: SimCity (1989), SimCity 2000 (1993), SimCity 3000 (1999) (Will Wright was not on the SimCity 4 (2003) or SimCity Societies (2007) design teams)
* SimEarth
* SimLife
* SimCopter
* SimAnt
* The Sims (Wright is credited for, but did not design most of The Sims 2, and is not designing The Sims 3)
* Spore (to be released September 2008)
His execution is better than most, but just the one idea really.
I was extremely interested in this game after that now famous first preview presentation by Will Wright (more than a year ago now?). What really bothers me is how the graphics have been dumbed down to be suitable for either a 'Sims' player or someone 13 and under (same thing, I guess). Even though back then I thought the graphics were a bit quirky at least there was some cartoon realism to them. Remember what the cell stage looked like originally? It was more like a petri dish in a laboratory somewhere. But now it has gone all Disney/Pixar on us and I for one find the whole atmosphere a tad bit too cutesy. We'll see if the game play makes up for this in the long run.

In all those games, whenever he wasn't involved, you can see games were shit. What he does is he comes up with fresh ideas from time to time and makes a good game. What happens later, usually, is EA making a franchise of them and destroying them.
If I recall right it use to have a less cutesy look to it before. But they probably made it cutesy because they want to draw in female gamers and are hoping to have a repeat of The Sims.
I'm kind of looking forward to this, although i have a feeling my girlfriend will probably end up playing this instead of me.
----That's what I meant by 'cutesy'. Will be waiting patiently for the Realism Modification for mature audiences.
Good luck waiting for that mod, my bet is that you will never be playing spore as there hasn't been any talk of the game supporting mods.
I for one applaud the move to the current graphics-style. It looks a lot better than earlier incarnations. But then again, i'm adult enough to be comfortable with disney/pixar things and do not demand every game to be "mature" ( ) looking.
Go wait for Stalker: clear skies or something if you want "mature" games. There are plenty of those types of games, so stop whining that one particular game isn't to your liking. I'm not demanding that every FPS which strives for realism is turned into a game with Team Fortress 2's art style now am I? I just play things more to my liking.

Each of those games have so much more than just 'sim' in terms of their developmental progression. There are so many things he added to each game that the previous one didn't have. Even if he didn't design sims 2 or the most recent simcity games, the fact is, he came up with so many amazing ideas for the predecessors that he is essentially a guru to me. He is up there with Carmack in my mind (who I basically put on a pedestal).

im a bit confuzzled.... watching the newest trailer
how does the cell phase work since we already have a creature editor ????
I think the creature editor is just to show off that part of the game as a demo, all the creatures people create now will appear randomly in other peoples games if they are connected to the net but when you play the full game, you start off in the cell stage and build your guys up from the start.

You are only using the editor to fill up the creature database in the sporepedia. You can use them in the game if you want (you should be able to use them in most of the stages if you want, but not sure about that), but I presonally want to experience every stage of evolution, thus making the creature more...mine. And this way they will have some history behind them as well.

Grow some fucking balls and dare to play a game that isnt just about gibs and gore.
It wont magically transform you into a kid, girl, or homosexual. I promise.
Its not "cutesy" to accomodate Sims players, its the ART-direction they have chosen. Ever heard of Art? Artstyle?
Never? Oh well i dont have the time to explain it.
