I havent played Pc games for a good 1.5 years now. I only recently got back into them, and want to build a new rig.
What can £400 get you these days? (tower only)
Ive got monitor and stuffs. Just need a tower with mobo/ram/gfx/hd etc

I'll leave the motherboards to more up to date guys. But about else:
Intel C2D E8500 (overclockable like hell) - Amazon
4-6 GB of DDR2 (whatever brand, 800-1066 MHz)
Ati Radeon 4850 (great cards) - Amazon
some 320-500 GB HDD
Don't waste too much on the motherboard, it's really not that worth it.

Why isn't anyone mentioning the i7 ? Do they suck ?
Because I'm thinking of buying a low-price PC and I want to jump on Intel's latest socket technology, so that I can upgrade in a year or so. And the low-end i7 was kinda cheap I think.

Intel Core i7 920 4x2.67GHz BOX 282,17 €
I guess you could get down the price to 250€ or so, but thats not to cheap if you also include a new X58 Mobo + at least 2 GB of DDR3 ram...

i7 are not cheap at all, especially when considering the cost of i7 (whatever socket that is) motherboards and DDR3 RAM. Also take into consideration that no game, no not even Crysis, uses all of i7's power, so you could just slide with a C2D for now, especially with the cheaper motherboards and RAM. For a budget machines, C2Ds are great.

go with the Phenom II 720 black edition tripple core, its the same as the 940 besides having one core less, which means you can OC it from 2.8ghz to 3.4ghz by just switching the multiplier ( no need to change Vcore, no need for expensive mobo or ram or have OC experience ) . Its also 10 bucks cheaper than the 8400

As for the HD go for a Western Digital Black 640GB 32mb cache
Read speed is about 101mb/s
To give you an idea i got the following drives also that i compared
WD 640GB 16mb cache blue : 93mb/s
WD raptor 74gb : 73mb/s
WD 500gb 16mb cache : 63mb/s
Those drives with 320gb platters blow away everything else there is in the consumer market, and they arent very expensive either going for under 70 euros.

Platters = each individual cylindrical disk in a harddrive. If a drive use 320GB platters and have a capacity of 640GB it has two of those 320GB-platters. Higher density platters (the more capacity a platter has) usually means they're faster to read/write on and seek times are lower (distances between sectors are smaller which means less area for the heads to scan to reach the right position).
