I'll leave the motherboards to more up to date guys. But about else:

Intel C2D E8500 (overclockable like hell) - Amazon
4-6 GB of DDR2 (whatever brand, 800-1066 MHz)
Ati Radeon 4850 (great cards) - Amazon
some 320-500 GB HDD

Don't waste too much on the motherboard, it's really not that worth it. Smile

If you're planning to with the 775 socket, this is the MB to get regarding price/ performance:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Awards/Motherboard/Awards_List.aspx?ProductID=2919

Perfect layout, above average OC ability and some neat power saving features.
Here are some reviews:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/10885-gigabyte-ga-ep45-ud3p-p45-motherboard-review.html

If you don't mind giving up on Crossfire, get the UD3R model which is pretty much the same MB minus the second PCIe 16x + extra ethernet connector for £20-25 less.
I've been using one of these almost 4 months now without a single problem... but my E4400 is a POS when OC'ing. Crying or Very sad

Or... you can wait and see how AMD will price their AM3 CPU's and MB's in a while and get one of those.

Either case make sure you get a good PSU(good i.e. one that's from a known manufacturer) for that system; trust me, you don't want to have a £350+ system running on a POS PSU...

Why isn't anyone mentioning the i7 ? Do they suck ?

Because I'm thinking of buying a low-price PC and I want to jump on Intel's latest socket technology, so that I can upgrade in a year or so. And the low-end i7 was kinda cheap I think.

Well, sort a
Intel Core i7 920 4x2.67GHz BOX 282,17 €

I guess you could get down the price to 250€ or so, but thats not to cheap if you also include a new X58 Mobo + at least 2 GB of DDR3 ram...

i7 are not cheap at all, especially when considering the cost of i7 (whatever socket that is) motherboards and DDR3 RAM. Also take into consideration that no game, no not even Crysis, uses all of i7's power, so you could just slide with a C2D for now, especially with the cheaper motherboards and RAM. For a budget machines, C2Ds are great. Smile

Top of the line C2D is
Intel Core2 Duo E8600 2x3.33GHz BOX 6MB 261,80 € (price may of course vary)

I guess we are talking dual cores here and not quads right? Confused

yeah. Dual core. I dont want to spend any more than £350 on mobo, chip + gfx card. The card im going for (8800GT) is £130. So that leaves £220 for mobo + chip.

Yes im a tight ass. BUT, I only play older games anyway so I dont really want an ubercomp. Long as I can play crysis + COH etc I dont care Smile

Dude, Amazon has 4850s for £136, and that card is clearly much better than a 8800.

Is this the card you mean leo? £99! sounds good, but how does it match up to my old 8800 GTS 320mb I had last year?

4GB DDR2 Kits are currently the sweet spot in price/size-ratio.

go with the Phenom II 720 black edition tripple core, its the same as the 940 besides having one core less, which means you can OC it from 2.8ghz to 3.4ghz by just switching the multiplier ( no need to change Vcore, no need for expensive mobo or ram or have OC experience ) . Its also 10 bucks cheaper than the 8400

As for the HD go for a Western Digital Black 640GB 32mb cache

Read speed is about 101mb/s

To give you an idea i got the following drives also that i compared

WD 640GB 16mb cache blue : 93mb/s
WD raptor 74gb : 73mb/s
WD 500gb 16mb cache : 63mb/s

Those drives with 320gb platters blow away everything else there is in the consumer market, and they arent very expensive either going for under 70 euros.

What do you mean with 320gb platters? in size or something else. There is also a difference in speed if the size is different right? Lets say 500gb WD black vs 640GB WD black And it seems 640 is the best bang for the buck or what

Thanks!!

Platters = each individual cylindrical disk in a harddrive. If a drive use 320GB platters and have a capacity of 640GB it has two of those 320GB-platters. Higher density platters (the more capacity a platter has) usually means they're faster to read/write on and seek times are lower (distances between sectors are smaller which means less area for the heads to scan to reach the right position).
