Yeah I think its the best retro shooter we've had yet. You will want to play on hardest difficulty unless they've since done a balance pass.
This is a good suggestion, as the game is still extremely easy on anything lower than Ultra Hard. Pretty sure the Normal difficulty was specifically tailored to gamejournos and Switch users
Another mandatory step for me was enabling the Minimal HUD from the options and resizing it (0.3) along with the crosshair since the default ones are both hilariously jarring and distracting.
It definitely feels satisfying to play in all its classic simplicity, a mix between Brutal Doom and Doom 2016 but without any silly auto-cutscenes to break the flow. Then the meaty gunplay, inspired pixel filter and pumping music do the rest. The level design seems decent as well, not particularly complex but not linear either. My retro-FPS itches are scratched/10
It's a very good game, very meaty. But saying it's the best boomer shooter.
Please play Amid Evil.

Pirated the early access a few months ago and it was impressive for the most part, but the level design wasn't the greatest and the respawn system is stupid. But the guns and gore, the most important part, they nailed it.

Amid Evil is too esoteric for my tastes. I really wanted to like it, just wish it were more dark fantasy like heretic than whatever the hell it was. It was a giant tease for me
Well, Prodeus is the closesed thing to what Doom Eternal should have been. Still it's sometimes buggy and things being locked by power ups is weird.

What's the 3rd party DRM about on this? Is it just for online or something?
It's on GOG. Search for GoG Games, zippyshare, enjoy.

The games is ultra easy until the second half of the game when you get two hit by the ticks, sniped in mid air, killed while dropping into new room. I don't negate what Ixi wrote because it really is still easy but just unbalanced, the blue - Prodeus enemies have a lot of tracking projectiles. I got killed through wall but just once. Still fine.
The thing that is the biggest problem is lack of checkpoints just respawn points. If you die on anything lesser than highest difficulty you just respawn full health. It kills the tension.
Except the chaos gate level where you don't have respawn point or any checkpoint but relentless waves of enemies who could and would kill you with two hits on Very High and Ultra High and you have to restart whole fight again and again and it feels like bullshit now.
The game is fine but the lack of save is just... shit.

I finished it and while it was pretty cool I have a few serious gripes with it.
First, the difficulty is all over the place. The game is made easy by the checkpoints system which allows you to respawn at the point of your death, meaning everything you killed up to that point is dead. You can pretty much punch everything in the game to death until the final missions by just dying and respawning endlessly. The enemies are balanced for this weird checkpoint system with some monsters being extremely hard to avoid and dealing a huge amount of damage. Clearly this aspect of the game is poorly tuned.
The monster variety is quite limited and it gets rather repetitive at some point.
The power ups being locked behind resources is a hit or mix approach.
The story it tries to tell is quite lackluster.
I enjoyed it. The combat is meaty and the visual design is fantastic. However, it could have been so much more and it can hardly justify all the time spent in Early Access.
So is Prodeus-I_KnoW somehow broken or am I too stupid to understand how to progress the game? When I finish the first level and reach the screen where my stats are being shown (completion, secrets blabla) I can't click on the "continue" button. When I click it, nothing happens. WTF?
What am I doing wrong? Is it a bad crack (if there is one at all) or am I missing something?
Playing this again, i dunno if they changed weapon balance or what but is it me or do the weapons sound great and feel punchy, but actually in practice feel kinda weak? Respawn system still garbage, level design kinda sucks.. running around tight corridors looking for keys.. not too impressed.

Remove the -goggalaxy thingy on the Prodeus icon (right click properties). Solved it for me.

Pretty cool game mens. Now, to wait for a steam sale and buy it for a pittance or to way for a gog sale in order to properly reward the devs? Decisions, decisions.

I just finished the campaign and indeed, you're absolutely right - there are maps and specific sections in the second half of the game that clearly need an extra coat of balance both when it comes to (questionable) enemy placement and actual design. The infinite respawning system certainly doesn't help with the sense of progression and reward, but sadly the devs don't seem eager to change that part since it was made with the leaderboards in mind, which is silly.
It's a pretty damn entertaining shooter and I definitely got my fix, still, it does feel a bit like a missed opportunity since it could have been truly great with a few changes/additional settings and more polished encounters.
